Bretherick and Tate Search

We plan to be in Panola County in late March.  Seeking information on Tate and Bretherick ancestors.  Grandfather Louis Franklin Tate born in Alabama,married Mattie Ethel Bretherick in Alabama their first child Albert Milner Tate (1898) born in Longtown Mississippi, the next child was born in Alabama, my father Claude Bretherick Tate (1902) was born in Crenshaw, Panola, MS. The next child was born back in Alabama.  Trying to discover why the back in forth from Alabama to MS and ultimately to Texas.  Apparently the Brethericks eventually become permanent residents of Panola county.
My grandfather was an Optician or Optometrist.  Practiced primarily in Erath County, Texas. Where did he train?
I am a retired Ophthalmologist, so the interest.  Where do we start? I understand there are more or less two county seats,  Sardis and Batesville in Panola County.
